The Wedding Plan

Chapter 09 - The Wedding Plan

The nurses became conspirators.

They moved Eleanor into Arthur’s larger room, placed flowers near the window, and found a lace shawl that could serve as a veil.

The hospital chaplain agreed to perform the ceremony as soon as the court confirmed Eleanor’s legal capacity.

Michael brought the marriage license and new estate documents in a tan envelope.

Claire purchased two simple gold bands.

Lily found Eleanor a cream lace dress that opened in the back so nurses could manage her monitors.

The wedding was scheduled for seven in the evening.

At six forty, Richard and Susan arrived with a temporary restraining order.

Their attorney claimed Arthur’s illness created undue emotional pressure and that Michael had conspired to alter Eleanor’s estate.

Hospital security blocked them from entering the room while Michael called the judge.

Eleanor heard Susan shouting in the corridor.

For a moment, she saw not a greedy woman but the frightened little girl who once crawled into her bed during thunderstorms.

Susan had always confused control with safety.

Eleanor had taught her part of that lesson by hiding every painful truth.

She asked to speak with her children.

Richard entered first.

He looked at the veil, Arthur’s oxygen line, and the marriage license on the bed.

“This is humiliating,” he said.

Eleanor smiled sadly.

“No. Humiliation was allowing other people to decide whom I loved because I was afraid to disappoint them.”

Susan began crying.

“What about us?”

“You are my children. You are not my owners.”

Richard pointed toward Arthur.

“He wants the land.”

Arthur struggled to sit upright.

“The land belonged to my family before your grandfather stole it. I still do not want it.”

Michael opened the envelope and showed them the prenuptial agreement.

Arthur would receive nothing.

Richard read the page twice.

His anger did not disappear.

It changed shape.

“If it is not money,” he asked, “why are you doing this?”

Eleanor looked at Arthur.

“Because love deserves one day without asking permission.”
