Chapter 9 - LILY’S QUESTIONS

Lily was fourteen when she became angry enough to ask for the full recording.
Caleb had expected curiosity earlier.
She had read the transcript at twelve.
At fourteen, after an argument with Megan during a supervised visit, she said:
“I want to see.”
Caleb asked:
“Why?”
“Because everyone tells me what happened.”
“You know the sequence.”
“I want to see her face.”
That was harder.
The regional archive allowed Lily access as subject.
A counselor attended.
Not Caleb.
Lily watched.
Megan lowering food first.
Northspan contact.
Then basket.
What stayed was not push.
It was Megan looking toward Anna.
Waiting.
Lily paused.
“She knew Anna was there.”
“Yes, counselor said.
“She needed Anna to save me.”
“Yes.”
“Then why say Anna did it?”
The counselor did not answer motive as fact.
“Your mother later said she needed your father to distrust Anna.”
Lily watched ten more seconds.
Stopped.
No need.
She never watched again.
At next visit with Megan, Lily asked:
“Did you trust Anna?”
Megan said:
“Yes.”
Lily laughed bitterly.
“You trusted her with my life.”
“Yes.”
“And not with Dad.”
Megan swallowed.
“I trusted her competence and resented her influence.”
“That is disgusting.”
“Yes.”
No defense.
Lily skipped visits two years.
At sixteen, she chose perimeter engineering apprenticeship.
Caleb worried history pushing.
She said:
“I like structures.”
Fine.
Lily eventually became a civil engineer specializing in elevated walkways and flood-resilient design because she liked building routes that kept communities connected.
At eighteen, she joined regional civil works school.
She designed bridges.
Not baby baskets.
At twenty-four, she helped replace the metro catwalk gaps that had once made West Bridge monopoly possible.
That was thematic but plausible.
She said:
“I like bridges because they go somewhere.”
No trauma slogan.
At twenty-eight, Lily married Noah Park, a teacher.
They had daughter Eva.
Megan attended wedding?
Lily invited her to ceremony but not family table? Could be nuanced. She had rebuilt limited relationship by then.
At twenty-six, after years of letters and occasional meetings, Lily decided Megan could attend.
No mother-of-bride role.
She sat with regional friends.
No speech.
Access chosen.
Anna attended too.
No confrontation.
At forty, Megan died.
By the time Lily was forty, Megan was in her seventies.
Megan had developed lung disease from mold exposure.
Lily visited once near end.
Not deathbed forgiveness.
They talked about gardens.
Before leaving Megan said:
“I am sorry.”
Lily:
“I know.”
That was all.
After death, Lily grieved.
Relationship had become limited but real.
This does not erase.
Anna lived longer maybe into Lily fifties.
At fifty, Anna retired from school.
Lily spoke:
“She taught half the district to read and once pulled me up a ladder.”
People laughed.
At sixty, Caleb died? He was perhaps 35 at incident -> 95 when Lily60? No, if Lily 60 Caleb 95. Could. Let him die age 87 when Lily 52.
At his memorial Lily said:
“He came home with food and found out the hardest shortage was trust.”
Maybe too poetic.
Better:
“He learned to listen before deciding.”
At seventy, Lily’s grandchildren knew outbreak as history.
Infected still existed in controlled zones.
No world reset.
At eighty, she visited old Rooftop Twelve building.
Most upper structure demolished after flood damage.
Solar panel frame preserved? No.
Nothing.
She did not need relic.
At ninety, she used a cane on bridges she had designed.
The south edge story felt distant.
She still checked ropes twice.
Some habits.
No shame.
At ninety-three, she recorded family history.
Not because she feared forgetting.
Because younger people kept asking if zombies almost ate her.
She wanted accuracy.
That becomes final chapter.
