The Sister Hidden in Plain Sight

Chapter 10 - The Sister Hidden in Plain Sight

Claire, Rachel, and Samuel drove to the care facility before sunrise.

It was not the luxurious private hospital Daniel had described. It was a modest rehabilitation residence beside an abandoned shopping center, with peeling paint and a garden maintained by patients.

Rebecca lived under the name Anne Reed.

She was thirty-seven, thin, and walked with a cane. A pale scar crossed her temple. Her speech was slow but precise.

When Claire introduced herself, Rebecca smiled.

“I know who you are.”

From a drawer, she removed newspaper clippings about Claire and the twins.

“Father sent me photographs before he died,” she said. “He said Daniel had two sons and no spine.”

Samuel laughed, then covered his mouth.

Rebecca’s smile faded when Rachel showed her the inheritance waiver.

“I did not sign this.”

The facility administrator entered carrying payment records.

Margaret had financed Rebecca’s care through a charitable trust, but the payments stopped six weeks earlier. A woman claiming to be a Mercer family attorney then told Rebecca that signing several forms was necessary to avoid eviction.

Rebecca had refused.

Someone forged her signature anyway.

Claire asked why Rebecca had never contacted the police.

Rebecca touched the scar near her temple.

“Because my mother spent eighteen years telling people my memory could not be trusted.”

The sentence landed harder than Claire expected.

Margaret had used different weapons against them—wealth against Claire, medical authority against Rebecca—but the purpose was the same.

Make a woman doubt her right to speak.

Rachel arranged emergency legal protection for Rebecca and obtained copies of her medical records. They showed she had been mentally competent for more than a decade.

As they prepared to leave, Rebecca asked to meet the twins.

Claire hesitated.

Rebecca noticed.

“You do not owe me trust because we share an enemy.”

It was the most honest thing anyone in the Mercer family had said.

Claire agreed to a short meeting.

That afternoon, Noah brought Rebecca a chessboard. Eli brought cookies from the bakery downstairs.

Rebecca beat Noah in twelve moves.

For the first time since court, he laughed.

Then Rebecca showed Claire a photograph taken days before the boating accident.

In the background stood Margaret and a young man Claire recognized.

He was now Judge Whitmore’s chief clerk.
