Chapter 11 - The Clerk Behind the Bench
The clerk’s name was Thomas Vale.
He had managed Judge Whitmore’s chambers for eleven years and controlled the filing schedule for every major civil case in the county.
In Rebecca’s photograph, Thomas was twenty-two and worked as a junior accountant for the Mercer family.
Rachel immediately alerted the judge.
Whitmore removed Thomas from the courthouse and ordered an internal audit. By noon, investigators discovered that several motions in Claire’s case had been delayed, misfiled, or assigned false dates.
Thomas disappeared before officers reached his home.
The news spread quickly.
Television vans returned to Claire’s street. Commentators who had once called her a liar now described her as a courageous mother. The reversal made Claire uneasy.
Public sympathy was another kind of appetite.
Rachel advised her to say nothing.
Daniel ignored that advice.
He held a press conference outside the Mercer headquarters and admitted that Claire was his lawful wife and Noah and Eli were his sons. He resigned from the company and promised to cooperate with prosecutors.
Reporters praised his honesty.
Claire turned off the television.
“Why are they calling him brave?” Noah asked.
“Because sometimes people applaud a man for finally doing what a woman was punished for doing all along,” Claire said.
She regretted the bitterness as soon as she heard it.
Noah considered her answer.
“That does not sound fair.”
“It is not.”
That evening, Daniel arrived without warning.
The patrol officer stopped him downstairs, but Claire agreed to speak in the lobby.
He looked smaller without his tailored coat and legal team.
“Thomas contacted me,” he said.
Claire stepped back.
“When?”
“An hour ago. He says he has records proving my mother caused Rebecca’s accident.”
“Then call the police.”
“He will destroy them unless I meet him alone.”
Claire stared at him.
“This is another trap.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you here?”
Daniel looked toward the ceiling, where the twins slept two floors above.
“Because for once, I am asking what protects them instead of what protects me.”
He handed Claire a phone containing Thomas’s message.
