The Woman on the Camera

Chapter 06 - The Woman on the Camera
The video was clear enough to make the courtroom turn toward Claire.
A woman with dark hair, a burgundy coat, and Claire’s height entered the Mercer Trust building at 11:42 p.m. She used a key, disabled an alarm, and remained inside for fourteen minutes.
Claire stared at the screen.
“That is not me.”
Daniel’s attorney moved quickly.
He suggested Claire had removed evidence, then produced the sealed envelope as a distraction. He asked the judge to place the twins temporarily with Daniel until a criminal inquiry could be completed.
Noah gripped Claire’s dress.
Eli began breathing too fast.
Rachel crouched beside them. “Look at me. Your mother is not leaving this room.”
Then she stood and asked for the original security file, not the compressed courtroom copy.
The technician enlarged the image.
At first, the woman appeared identical to Claire. Then Rachel pointed to the left hand.
The woman wore a wide gold ring.
Claire wore no wedding ring and had not for years.
Rachel requested another angle.
The second camera showed the woman entering a black town car registered to Margaret Mercer’s private office.
Margaret did not react.
Daniel did.
He turned toward his mother as though a final doubt had been removed.
“You sent Vivian,” he said.
The name meant nothing to Claire.
Rachel knew it.
Vivian Cross was Margaret’s personal assistant, a former stage actress whose resemblance to Claire had once been mentioned in a society magazine. She managed Margaret’s private appointments and never appeared in photographs if she could avoid it.
Judge Whitmore ordered officers to locate her.
Margaret’s attorney claimed the town car had been stolen.
Then the courthouse doors opened.
A woman in a gray suit entered with two state investigators.
She removed a dark wig and placed it on the evidence table.
Without it, her hair was silver.
“My name is Vivian Cross,” she said. “I entered the building on Margaret Mercer’s orders.”
Margaret stared straight ahead.
Vivian continued.
“I was supposed to remove the video and replace the financial ledger. But I did not destroy either one.”
“Where are they?” Judge Whitmore asked.
Vivian looked at Daniel.
“I gave them to the only person Margaret would never search.”

Then she pointed toward the back row.
An elderly courthouse custodian slowly rose from his seat.
