Chapter 07 - The Custodian Who Knew Edward

The custodian’s name was Samuel Pike.

For eighteen years, he had worked as Edward Mercer’s driver. After Edward died, Margaret dismissed him without severance and accused him of stealing a watch that was later found in her own safe.

Samuel had spent the next decade cleaning county buildings at night.

No one in the courtroom recognized him except Daniel.

“Sam,” Daniel whispered.

Samuel carried a battered metal lunchbox to the front.

Inside were a flash drive, a leather ledger, and a photograph of Edward holding the newborn twins.

Claire had never seen the picture.

Edward looked older than she remembered, but happy. Noah slept against his chest while Eli stared directly at the camera.

Samuel explained that Vivian had contacted him three weeks earlier.

“She told me Mrs. Mercer was preparing to remove the last records. Mr. Edward once said that if the truth ever needed a poor man to carry it, a poor man would be harder to buy.”

A few people in the courtroom laughed softly.

Margaret did not.

The judge recessed the custody hearing while investigators authenticated the materials. Claire and the twins were moved to a private room for protection.

Daniel remained in the courtroom.

Before Claire left, he stepped toward her.

“I did not know about the break-in,” he said.

Claire studied him.

“That is what you always say. You did not know. You could not stop her. You were trapped.”

“I was.”

“So were your sons.”

Daniel flinched.

He tried to speak, but Noah moved between them.

“You said you never met us,” the boy said.

Daniel’s face collapsed in a way no attorney could repair.

“I was wrong.”
