What Happened at the Boathouse

Chapter 12 - What Happened at the Boathouse

Police refused to allow Daniel to go alone.

They fitted him with a recording device and positioned officers around the property. Claire remained at a command vehicle with Rachel, though every instinct told her to go home to the boys.

Thomas arrived carrying a waterproof case.

He looked exhausted and desperate.

For years, he had helped Margaret alter court records, move money, and silence employees. In exchange, she paid his debts and promised him a senior position in the family foundation.

But Margaret had recently decided he knew too much.

Thomas wanted immunity.

Daniel asked about Rebecca’s accident.

Thomas opened the case and removed an old cassette recording.

On it, Margaret argued with nineteen-year-old Rebecca about documents she intended to give Edward. Rebecca had discovered Margaret diverting trust money into private accounts.

The argument moved onto the boat.

Margaret ordered the driver to frighten Rebecca into silence. The driver accelerated recklessly. Rebecca fell overboard and struck her head.

Margaret did not intend to kill her.

But when Rebecca survived with memory loss, Margaret saw an opportunity.

She declared her daughter unstable, hid her from Edward, and paid Thomas to create a death record using an unidentified victim from another county.

Daniel’s breathing became uneven.

“You knew my sister was alive.”

Thomas nodded.

“You knew my father died believing she was dead.”

“Yes.”

Daniel took one step forward.

Officers moved in before anger became violence.

Thomas surrendered the case.

As police led him away, he shouted toward Daniel.

“Your mother did not build this alone. Every person who stayed quiet laid a brick.”

The words reached Claire through the monitor.

They were true.

Daniel had not caused Rebecca’s accident. Claire had not erased the records. Samuel had not forged the will.

But silence had protected every crime.

At dawn, officers arrested Margaret Mercer at her estate.

She refused to leave through the side entrance.

She walked down the front steps while cameras recorded her, dressed in pearls and a dark wool coat.

Before entering the police car, she looked directly into the nearest camera.

“My family will beg me to fix this,” she said.

For the first time, no one believed her.

Yet the arrest did not end the danger.

That afternoon, the twins vanished from school.
