The Judge’s First Page

Chapter 05 - The Judge’s First Page
Judge Whitmore broke the seal carefully.
Inside were three items: a handwritten letter, a certified copy of a marriage record, and a small brass key taped to an index card.
The judge read the marriage certificate first.
The courtroom clerk checked its registration number against state archives.
“It is valid,” she confirmed.
Daniel’s attorney requested a recess.
Judge Whitmore denied it.
Margaret began writing urgently on a legal pad, but Daniel took the pen from her hand.
“Stop,” he muttered.
The judge opened Edward’s letter.
The first sentence changed the atmosphere in the room.
To the court, to my grandchildren, and to the woman my son failed to protect.
Claire closed her eyes.
Edward described Daniel and Claire’s wedding, the twins’ birth, Margaret’s threats, and the steps taken to erase public records. He named two employees ordered to remove files and one county clerk paid through a consulting company.
Then came a line that made Daniel lower his head.
My son is responsible for his cowardice, but his cowardice was cultivated, rewarded, and finally purchased by his mother.
Margaret stood.
“This is the delusion of a sick man.”
Judge Whitmore ordered her to sit.
The letter continued.
Edward explained that the brass key opened a private box inside the old Mercer Trust Company building. The box held a video statement and financial records concerning the twins’ inheritance.
Rachel Sloan asked the court to issue an immediate preservation order.
Daniel’s attorney argued that the box might not exist.
Judge Whitmore turned to the bailiff.
“Contact the state financial crimes division. No member of the Mercer family is to enter that building until officers arrive.”
Margaret’s face went pale.
The judge then looked at Claire.
“Mrs. Bennett, why did you wait nine years to present this?”
Claire placed both hands on the twins’ shoulders.
“Because I kept hoping their father would tell the truth before strangers had to force it out of him.”
Daniel finally met her eyes.
His expression held shame, but also a warning.
Before the judge could speak again, an officer entered and handed him a message.

The private box had been opened the previous night.
And the security camera showed Claire entering the building.
