Chapter 01 - She Walked Into His Wedding Holding Three Little Boys—Then the Groom Recognized Their Faces

## chapter 01 - The Woman in the Red Dress

The wedding at the Hawthorne Estate had already cost more than most families earned in ten years.

White roses covered the marble staircase. Black cars lined the circular drive. Nearly two hundred guests stood beneath the late-afternoon sun, waiting for billionaire hotel heir Nathan Hale to marry Madeline Prescott.

Then another black car stopped at the bottom of the steps.

A woman in a deep red off-the-shoulder dress stepped out.

She was beautiful, but there was nothing celebratory in her expression.

Her name was Claire Bennett.

And she was holding the hands of three little boys.

The boys looked about five years old. They wore matching pale-pink suits, white shirts, and small bow ties. They stared nervously at the enormous mansion while Claire led them through the crowd.

Whispers began immediately.

Nathan was standing near the front entrance in his tuxedo when he saw her.

His face changed.

“Claire?”

She stopped several feet away.

The three boys moved closer to her.

Nathan looked from one child to the next.

Same dark eyes.

Same sharp eyebrows.

Same small dimple in the left cheek.

His dimple.

For several seconds, Nathan could not speak.

Madeline appeared at the top of the stairs in her wedding gown.

“What’s going on?”

Claire looked at Nathan.

She had imagined this moment for nearly six years.

She had imagined screaming.

Crying.

Throwing every cruel memory at him.

Instead, her voice came out almost calm.

“Before you marry her,” she said, “there’s something your bride deserves to know.”

Nathan stared at the three boys.

One of them whispered to Claire.

“Mommy, is that him?”

The wedding guests fell silent.

Nathan heard the question.

So did Madeline.

Claire tightened her grip on her sons’ hands.

Then she looked directly at the man she had once planned to spend her life with.

“You should probably tell your bride why my sons have your last name.”
