One year later, Nathan brought Claire back to Hawthorne Estate.
The mansion looked different.
Maybe because Claire was different.
White roses once again covered the staircase.
But there were only forty guests.
Madeline attended with someone she had met through her new work.
Thomas Prescott came too.
Victoria sat quietly in the second row.
She now saw the triplets regularly, under Claire and Nathan’s rules.
The three boys wore matching black suits.
Nathan stood at the bottom of the stairs.
This time, he was not waiting for another bride.
Claire appeared in a simple ivory dress.
Ethan whispered loudly to his brothers.
“Mom looks pretty.”
Oliver answered.
“She always looks pretty.”
Noah nodded seriously.
“Except in the morning.”
Everyone laughed.
Claire reached Nathan.
He took her hands.
Six years earlier, other people had made decisions about their lives.
Today, no one would.
Nathan looked at Claire.
“You ready?”
She smiled.
“I’ve been ready since you finally learned how to use a thermometer.”
