Chapter 16 - The Letter Nathan Never Received
Victoria arrived at Claire’s house carrying a box.
Inside were dozens of letters.
Every letter Claire had sent Nathan six years earlier.
Victoria had intercepted them.
Nathan opened the first.
Claire had written it while pregnant.
The second contained an ultrasound photograph.
The third said they were having triplets.
Nathan sat down.
By the tenth letter, he was crying.
Claire could not watch.
She went outside.
Victoria followed.
“I don’t expect forgiveness.”
“Good.”
“I was wrong.”
“Yes.”
“I thought I was protecting him.”
Claire turned.
“You protected the life you wanted him to have.”
Victoria nodded.
Claire looked through the window.
Nathan was reading a letter while three little boys climbed around him.
“You stole years from all of us.”
“I know.”
“You can’t give them back.”
“I know.”
Claire studied her.
For once, Victoria Hale had no defense.
Claire finally said, “The boys may choose to know you.”
Hope appeared in Victoria’s eyes.
Claire immediately added, “That choice belongs to them. Not you.”
