Chapter 01 - The Day He Came for His Children at Their Mother's Funeral—Their Grandfather Opened One Final Letter

## chapter 01 - The Man Who Came Too Late

The first thing eight-year-old Sophie noticed was the sound of tires on wet gravel.

She was standing beside her grandfather in the cold cemetery, holding a silver-framed photograph against her black dress.

In the photograph, her mother was smiling.

Rebecca Carter had been thirty-six when the picture was taken.

She had been thirty-eight when they lowered her coffin into the ground.

Beside Sophie stood her six-year-old brother, Ben, staring at the white lilies covering the polished black casket.

Their grandfather, seventy-year-old Jonathan Carter, kept one hand on each child.

He had not cried during the service.

Not when the minister spoke.

Not when Rebecca's closest friend broke down halfway through the eulogy.

Not even when Sophie whispered, "Grandpa, where does Mommy go now?"

Jonathan had spent his entire life believing grief was something a man carried quietly.

Then the black SUV stopped near the cemetery entrance.

A man jumped out before the vehicle had completely stopped.

Daniel Mercer.

Rebecca's husband.

The father of her children.

The man who had not been seen in nearly eight months.

"Rebecca!"

His voice broke across the cemetery.

Every head turned.

Daniel ran toward the grave.

A uniformed police officer stepped in front of him.

"Sir, you need to stop."

"Those are my children."

Daniel tried to move around him.

The officer blocked him again.

Sophie immediately moved closer to Jonathan.

Ben grabbed his grandfather's coat.

Daniel saw them.

"Sophie."

She did not answer.

"Ben."

The little boy looked down.

Daniel's face collapsed.

"I'm your father."

Jonathan finally turned.

His gray beard trembled slightly in the wind.

"No," he said quietly.

Daniel stared at him.

"What did you say?"

Jonathan reached inside his black coat and removed a dark leather folder.

"You were their father when Rebecca begged you to come home."

Daniel's face changed.

"You don't know what happened."

Jonathan opened the folder.

Inside was a court document bearing an official seal.

"I know exactly what happened."

Daniel looked toward the coffin.

Then at his children.

Then at the document in Jonathan's hands.

"What is that?"

Jonathan's voice remained calm.

"The last thing my daughter did before she died."

Daniel took one step forward.

The police officer stopped him.

Jonathan looked directly into his former son-in-law's eyes.

"She made sure you could never take her children again."
