The Daughter Who Tried to Save Everyone

Chapter 11 - The Daughter Who Tried to Save Everyone
Jonathan became angry with Rebecca.
He knew it was irrational.
She was gone.
But grief had stopped being clean.
His daughter had discovered dangerous secrets.
Instead of coming to him, she carried everything alone.
She pushed away her husband.
Protected her father.
Hid evidence.
Prepared her children.
And slowly became trapped inside the very danger she thought she could control.
One evening, Jonathan stood at her grave alone.
"You should have told me."
The wind moved through the trees.
"I was your father."
His voice cracked.
"I was supposed to protect you."
Behind him, Daniel spoke.
"She thought she was protecting us."
Jonathan wiped his eyes.
"I know."
Daniel stood beside him.
For months, the two men had blamed each other.
Jonathan thought Daniel abandoned Rebecca.
Daniel believed Jonathan helped keep him away.
Now both understood the truth.
Neither had been the enemy.
They were simply two men Rebecca loved enough to lie to.
Daniel placed flowers near the grave.
"I don't know whether to forgive her."
Jonathan looked at him.
"You don't have to decide today."
"What if I never can?"
"Then love her anyway."
Daniel looked toward him.
Jonathan managed a sad smile.
"Marriage doesn't end the argument just because one person is gone."
For the first time since the funeral, Daniel laughed.
Then Jonathan's phone rang.
The medical examiner had completed Rebecca's toxicology analysis.
A substance had been found in her preserved blood samples.
A medication she had never been prescribed.
