The Godfather

Chapter 04 - The Godfather
William Foster had known Rebecca since the day she was born.
He had stood beside Jonathan at his wife's funeral.
He had attended every Carter family Christmas for thirty years.
Rebecca called him Uncle Will.
At the cemetery, William had hugged Sophie.
He had kissed Ben on the head.
Then he had watched police stop Daniel from reaching his own children.
Jonathan felt sick.
The following morning, William arrived at the house carrying breakfast.
"I thought the kids might need something."
Jonathan studied him.
Same expensive wool coat.
Same calm smile.
Same man he had trusted with everything.
"That's thoughtful."
William looked around.
"Where are they?"
"Sleeping."
"How are they doing?"
"How do you think?"
William sighed.
"Poor Rebecca."
Jonathan wanted to put his hands around the man's throat.
Instead, he poured coffee.
"Daniel came yesterday."
"I heard."
"Of course you did."
William's eyes moved toward him.
"What does that mean?"
"Nothing."
Jonathan placed a cup on the table.
William sat.
"You can't let Daniel take those children."
Jonathan looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because he abandoned them."
"Did he?"
William hesitated.
Only for a second.
But Jonathan saw it.
"Rebecca told me everything," William said.
"Everything?"
"About the marriage."
Jonathan leaned back.
"What did she say?"
William's confidence returned.
"That Daniel became controlling. That she was afraid of him."
Jonathan had never heard Rebecca say that.
Not once.
William continued.
"The guardianship order exists for a reason."
"It does."
"You should make it permanent."
Jonathan looked at his oldest friend.
Then smiled faintly.
"I intend to."
William relaxed.

He did not know Jonathan had spent the previous hour calling Daniel.
And he definitely did not know Daniel was standing in the next room listening to every word.
