Chapter 01 - He Married Me in a Hospital Room—Then He Handed Me an Envelope His Children Never Wanted Me to See
## chapter 01 - The Wedding Beside the Hospital Bed
At seventy-one, Eleanor Whitmore never imagined she would become a bride again.
Certainly not beneath fluorescent hospital lights.
She stood beside a narrow hospital bed wearing a simple ivory lace dress and a small veil pinned into her silver hair. A pearl bracelet circled her wrist—the same bracelet her mother had given her almost fifty years earlier.
Beside her, Thomas Caldwell struggled to breathe through the oxygen tube beneath his nose.
He was seventy-six.
And according to his doctors, he might not live through the month.
“You still have time to change your mind,” Eleanor whispered.
Thomas smiled.
“I had twenty-eight years to change my mind.”
His voice was weak.
“I think that's enough.”
Eleanor fought back tears.
They had loved each other once, when they were young.
Life had separated them.
Thomas married someone else.
Eleanor married too.
Both raised families.
Both eventually lost their spouses.
Then, three years earlier, they found each other again.
Now Thomas wanted to spend whatever time remained as Eleanor's husband.
There were no flowers covering the room.
No ballroom.
No orchestra.
Only a nurse standing near the doorway and a hospital chaplain holding a small book.
Thomas slipped a gold ring onto Eleanor's trembling finger.
Then he reached beneath his blanket.
He pulled out a sealed brown envelope.
Eleanor frowned.
“What is that?”
Thomas placed it in her hands.
“Something I should have given you a long time ago.”
Before Eleanor could ask another question, the hospital room door opened.
Thomas's eldest son, Richard, stood there.
Behind him was his younger sister, Diane.
Neither looked happy.
Richard stared at Eleanor's wedding dress.
Then at the ring.
Then at the envelope in her hands.
His face went white.
“Dad,” he said.
May you like
“What did you give her?”
And Eleanor suddenly realized the wedding might not be the secret Thomas's children feared most.
