The Confession No One Expected

Chapter 12 - The Confession No One Expected
Richard returned the next morning.
Without an attorney.
He carried a folder.
Diane refused to speak to him.
Eleanor stood near Thomas's bed.
Richard placed the folder down.
“I want to fix it.”
Diane laughed bitterly.
“You can't.”
“I know.”
Richard opened the folder.
He had listed every account.
Every transfer.
Every loan.
Every forged signature.
The total was worse than they knew.
Nearly four million dollars.
Richard had also hidden personal debts from his wife.
His marriage was collapsing.
His business was insolvent.
He had nothing left except a house heavily mortgaged and a reputation built on lies.
Diane asked, “Why are you telling us now?”
Richard looked at Thomas.
“Because Dad told me he was sorry.”
Everyone stared at him.
Richard continued.
“He apologized for teaching me that there would always be someone to clean up after me.”
Thomas closed his eyes.
Richard began crying.
“I hated him for saying it.”
He swallowed.
“Then I realized he was right.”
Eleanor said nothing.
Confession was not redemption.
But it was a beginning.
Richard agreed to cooperate with forensic accountants.
He would sell personal assets.
He would resign from the family company.
If criminal charges came, he would face them.
Diane looked at him.
“Why should I trust you?”
“You shouldn't.”
Richard's answer surprised everyone.
“Not yet.”
Thomas opened his eyes.
For the first time in months, he smiled at his son.
May you like
Not because everything was forgiven.
Because Richard had finally stopped asking to be saved.
