The Will Reading

Chapter 17 - The Will Reading

The official reading of Thomas's will happened a month later.

Richard received less than he expected.

Diane received less too.

Caroline also.

The bulk of the estate went into protected trusts for the grandchildren and charitable foundations Thomas had supported for decades.

The family company was placed under professional management.

No child controlled it.

Eleanor received the Vermont lake house.

Nothing more.

Richard stared at the documents.

Then at Eleanor.

“You knew?”

“No.”

Diane laughed.

“Dad really did not trust any of us.”

Richard smiled sadly.

“Maybe he finally trusted us enough to disappoint us.”

The attorney handed Eleanor a final letter.

Thomas had written:

My children,

If you are angry, good.

Perhaps anger will force you to build lives that do not depend on what I leave behind.

To Eleanor,

Thank you for teaching an old man that arriving late is still arriving.

Eleanor pressed the paper to her chest.

There was no battle over the will.

No lawsuits.

No public war.

Richard signed the necessary documents.

Diane did too.

Caroline hugged Eleanor.

Something had changed.

The inheritance everyone once feared losing had become less important than the family they almost destroyed fighting over it.
