Twenty-Eight Years Earlier

Chapter 03 - Twenty-Eight Years Earlier

Eleanor first met Thomas when she was twenty-three.

He was twenty-eight.

She worked at a small library outside Boston.

Thomas came in every Thursday.

At first, Eleanor believed he loved books.

Years later, he admitted he had barely read half of what he borrowed.

He simply wanted to see her.

They fell in love quietly.

Sunday drives.

Coffee in paper cups.

Long walks along the Charles River.

Then Thomas's father became ill, and Thomas returned to Connecticut to help with the family business.

He promised Eleanor he would come back.

He did.

But not in the way she expected.

When he returned six months later, he was engaged to Margaret Hale, the daughter of his father's business partner.

Eleanor never asked why.

She was too proud.

Thomas never explained.

He was too ashamed.

She married Daniel Whitmore three years later.

Daniel was kind.

Dependable.

A good husband.

They had one daughter, Rebecca.

Eleanor built a good life.

But some questions never completely disappear.

Twenty-eight years passed before Eleanor and Thomas saw each other again at a charity dinner.

By then, both were still married.

They spoke for seven minutes.

Nothing improper happened.

Yet Eleanor went home feeling as if someone had opened a door she had sealed decades earlier.

Years later, after Daniel died, Thomas sent a condolence card.

After Margaret died, Eleanor sent one too.

Then, one rainy afternoon, Thomas appeared at her door holding two coffees.

“I thought we had waited long enough,” he said.

They were both over sixty-five.

Eleanor laughed.

Then she let him in.

What she did not know was that Thomas had carried one secret from their youth for nearly half a century.

And it was inside the envelope now resting in her purse.
