The Promise Margaret Made

Chapter 09 - The Promise Margaret Made
Thomas looked smaller in the ICU bed.
Eleanor sat beside him.
“You scared me.”
He smiled weakly.
“I've been doing that a lot lately.”
She held his hand.
Then she asked the question that had been haunting her.
“Did Margaret really know about me?”
Thomas nodded.
“She knew everything.”
Eleanor looked away.
She had spent years feeling guilty about finding happiness after both their spouses died.
Now the past felt more complicated.
Thomas explained.
Margaret had discovered old letters early in their marriage.
She confronted him.
He told her the truth.
For years, the knowledge hurt them both.
But they built a real marriage anyway.
Not the marriage Thomas imagined as a young man.
A different one.
They raised children.
Shared grief.
Forgave mistakes.
Loved imperfectly.
Months before Margaret died, she asked him one question.
“If Eleanor were free someday, would you go to her?”
Thomas told her he didn't know.
Margaret laughed.
“You're still a terrible liar.”
Eleanor cried.
Thomas squeezed her hand.
“She told me not to waste whatever time was left.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I didn't want you to think our happiness came at her expense.”
Eleanor lowered her head.
Thomas whispered, “It didn't.”
For the first time, Eleanor understood that love did not always replace what came before.
Sometimes it grew beside it.
Thomas had loved Margaret.
He loved Eleanor too.
Both could be true.
Then Thomas said something else.
“There's one more thing you need to know.”
Eleanor looked at him.
“The lake house isn't the only thing Richard is trying to recover.”
Her stomach tightened.
Thomas took a slow breath.
May you like
“There is another account.”
And unlike the others, Richard had no idea where it was.
