The Night Thomas Almost Died

Chapter 08 - The Night Thomas Almost Died
Thomas survived the night.
Barely.
The doctors moved him to intensive care.
For twelve hours, no family members were allowed inside.
Eleanor sat in the waiting room wearing the same wedding dress beneath a borrowed cardigan.
Diane slept against her shoulder.
Richard sat alone across the room.
At dawn, he finally spoke.
“You turned her against me.”
Diane woke.
Eleanor looked at Richard.
“No.”
Richard laughed bitterly.
“You show up after forty-eight years and suddenly you're his wife.”
“Three years,” Eleanor said.
“What?”
“Thomas and I have been together for three years.”
Richard stared at her.
“I didn't know.”
“No,” Eleanor said.
“You didn't ask.”
Diane sat up.
Richard turned toward his sister.
“You believe her now?”
“I believe the bank records.”
Richard's face changed.
For a moment, Eleanor saw fear beneath the arrogance.
“I was going to put it back.”
Diane stared at him.
“What?”
The words had escaped before Richard could stop them.
Eleanor leaned forward.
“Put what back?”
Richard said nothing.
Diane stood.
“How much?”
Richard looked away.
“How much, Richard?”
His voice dropped.
“Not all of it.”
Diane began crying.
“You stole from us.”
“I borrowed.”
“You forged my signature.”
“I was desperate.”
“Why?”
Richard looked toward the ICU doors.
Then he finally admitted the truth.
His real-estate investment company had been collapsing for five years.
He had used family money to hide the losses.
Every new loan paid an older debt.
Every secret created another.
Thomas discovered the scheme eighteen months earlier.
He demanded repayment.
Richard could not repay it.
Then Thomas became sick.
And Richard began waiting.
Not for his father to recover.
For the estate.
Eleanor watched Richard realize what he had confessed.
The room went silent.
Then the ICU door opened.
A doctor stepped out.
“Mrs. Caldwell?”
Eleanor stood.
“Your husband is asking for you.”
Richard closed his eyes.
May you like
Thomas had survived.
And Richard's secrets had not.
