The Wedding Photograph

Chapter 19 - The Wedding Photograph
One year after Thomas died, Eleanor found the hospital wedding photograph.
A nurse had mailed it.
In the picture, Thomas looked tired.
Thin.
Fragile.
But smiling.
Eleanor stood beside him in her simple ivory dress.
The envelope was visible in her hand.
For months, Eleanor had believed the envelope changed everything.
It did not.
The papers inside exposed secrets.
But paper could not repair a family.
People had to do that.
Diane had learned to say no.
Richard had learned to accept consequences.
Caroline had learned to ask before accusing.
And Eleanor?
She had learned that love did not become foolish simply because it arrived late.
That summer, the entire family gathered at the lake house.
All six grandchildren came.
Children ran through rooms once filled only with silence.
Richard cooked badly.
Diane complained.
Caroline took photographs.
Eleanor sat on the porch holding Thomas's watch.
For one brief moment, she imagined him beside her.
Not sick.
Not old.
Just smiling.
“You finally got everyone here,” she whispered.
Then Richard stepped onto the porch.
“Talking to Dad?”
“Maybe.”
“What did he say?”
Eleanor smiled.
“That your steak is overcooked.”
Richard laughed.
“I knew it.”
And from inside the house came the sound Thomas had spent his whole life trying to preserve.
Family.
Not perfect.
Not obedient.
May you like
Not wealthy.
Just together.
