Chapter 01 - She Walked Into His Wedding With Three Little Boys—And the Groom Went Pale When One Asked, “Are You Our Dad?”

## chapter 01 - The Woman in the Red Dress

The black SUV rolled to a stop at the foot of the Whitmore estate just as the string quartet began the first notes of the wedding march.

Two hundred guests turned toward the sound.

They had been expecting the bride.

Instead, a woman stepped out wearing a floor-length red dress.

Her dark hair fell over her shoulders, and although her face was composed, her eyes carried the exhausted courage of someone who had spent years preparing for one impossible moment.

Then three little boys climbed out behind her.

All three wore pale pink suits with matching bow ties.

All three had the same gray-green eyes.

And all three looked painfully familiar.

Nathan Whitmore stood halfway down the marble steps in his black tuxedo.

His smile disappeared.

Elena Carter took one boy's hand in her left hand and another's in her right. The third stayed close beside her.

Guests whispered.

Nathan's mother, Evelyn, pushed through the crowd.

"What are you doing here?"

Elena never looked at her.

She looked only at Nathan.

"Before you marry Madison," she said, her voice carrying across the suddenly silent courtyard, "there's something you deserve to know."

Nathan stared at the boys.

The youngest, Sam, looked up at Elena.

"Mom?"

"It's okay, sweetheart."

Nathan took one step forward.

His face had gone pale.

Elena swallowed.

"Seven years ago, your mother told me you wanted nothing to do with me or the babies."

A gasp moved through the guests.

Evelyn's expression hardened.

"She's lying."

Elena finally turned toward her.

"No, Evelyn. I'm done letting you decide which truth your son is allowed to hear."

Nathan looked from his mother to Elena.

"Babies?"

Elena's composure cracked.

She gently pushed the three boys forward.

"These are Noah, Eli, and Sam."

Nathan's breathing changed.

Three boys.

Three faces that looked like childhood photographs hanging inside the estate.

One of the boys tilted his head.

Then Noah, the oldest by four minutes, looked directly at Nathan.

"Mom..."

His voice was small.

"Is that the man you said was our father?"

May you like

Nathan's eyes filled with shock.

And somewhere behind him, a champagne glass shattered.
