The Night Evelyn Came to the Hospital

Chapter 06 - The Night Evelyn Came to the Hospital
Sam had been two years old when a severe infection sent his temperature dangerously high.
Elena remembered the fluorescent lights.
The machines.
The helplessness.
She had sat beside his crib in the pediatric intensive care unit, holding his tiny hand and promising him things she wasn't sure she could give.
"You'll go home."
"You'll play with your brothers."
"You'll be okay."
At three in the morning, Elena walked downstairs for coffee.
Evelyn was standing in the hospital lobby.
Elena nearly dropped the cup.
"What are you doing here?"
Evelyn looked older than Elena remembered.
But not softer.
"I heard about the child."
"The child?"
"Sam."
Elena stared at her.
"You know his name."
Evelyn didn't answer.
"How long have you known?"
Silence.
"How long?"
"Since they were born."
Elena had slapped her.
It was the only time in her life she had ever struck another person.
And afterward she had hated herself for giving Evelyn a reason to call her unstable.
Back at the estate, Nathan listened without interrupting.
Elena continued.
"I begged her to tell you."
Nathan's eyes closed.
"I told her Sam might die without ever meeting his father."
"What did she say?"
Elena stared directly at Evelyn.
"She said bringing three children into your life would destroy everything she had rebuilt after your accident."
Nathan looked physically ill.
Evelyn finally snapped.
"You don't understand what he was like!"
Nathan faced her.
"Then explain it."
"You couldn't remember entire weeks. You couldn't walk without assistance. Your father was dying. The company was failing."
"So you erased my children?"
"I protected you!"
"No."
Nathan's voice echoed across the courtyard.
"You protected the life you wanted me to have."
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
For the first time, she looked like a mother rather than a villain.
But Nathan was not ready to forgive her.
Neither was Elena.
Sam tugged Elena's hand.
"Mom, can we go home?"
Elena looked down.
"Yes."
Nathan stepped forward.
"Elena."
She stopped.
"Please don't take them away before I..."
His voice failed.
Elena's expression softened only slightly.
"Before you what?"
"Before I get a chance to know them."
Noah looked at Nathan.
Then at Elena.
"Can he come tomorrow?"
Elena froze.
Nathan didn't speak.
The decision belonged to her.
She looked at the man who had unknowingly missed seven years.
Then she looked at the woman who had deliberately stolen them.
"Tomorrow," Elena said quietly.
Nathan exhaled.
"But there's something you need to understand."
She moved closer.
"You don't become their father because the truth came out at your wedding."
Nathan nodded.
"You become their father if you show up after everyone stops watching."
May you like
Then she left.
And the next morning, at exactly 7:02, someone knocked on Elena's front door.
