The Friend Who Stayed Silent

Chapter 16 - The Friend Who Stayed Silent
The person Madison named was Nathan's attorney and oldest friend, Michael Reed.
Nathan had known Michael since college.
Michael had helped him through rehabilitation after the accident.
He had stood beside Nathan when his father died.
He had been scheduled to serve as best man at the wedding.
And six years earlier, Michael had seen Elena.
By accident.
At an airport.
She had been traveling with three toddlers.
Michael recognized her immediately.
Elena remembered the encounter.
She had been exhausted, pushing a double stroller while Noah clung to her coat.
Michael stared at the children.
Then at her.
"You had the babies?"
Elena had laughed bitterly.
"Did Nathan send you?"
Michael looked genuinely confused.
She told him to leave.
He did.
And he never told Nathan.
When confronted, Michael admitted everything.
Nathan looked shattered.
"Why?"
Michael rubbed both hands over his face.
"Your mother told me the children weren't yours."
"So you believed her?"
"I didn't know what to believe."
"You could have asked me."
"You were finally rebuilding your life."
Nathan laughed bitterly.
There it was again.
Everyone deciding which truths he could survive.
Michael's eyes filled.
"I was wrong."
Nathan nodded.
"Yes."
"I thought I was protecting you."
"Everyone keeps saying that."
Nathan walked away.
Michael called after him.
"I was your friend."
Nathan stopped.
"No."
He turned.
"You were loyal to the version of my life that made you comfortable."
The friendship ended that day.
Not with shouting.
Not with revenge.
Just with distance.
For Elena, it became the final proof that their tragedy had never been caused by one villain.
It had been caused by a circle of people choosing silence.
Evelyn began it.
But others kept it alive.
That evening, Elena found Nathan sitting alone on her porch.
"You okay?"
"No."
"Good answer."
He almost smiled.
"I keep wondering who else knew."
Elena sat beside him.
"At some point, you have to stop digging backward."
"How?"
"By deciding the future matters more."
Nathan looked at her.
"Is there a future?"
Elena's heart raced.
"For you and the boys?"
"For all five of us."
She looked away.
Nathan waited.
Finally Elena whispered, "Maybe."
It was not a promise.
But it was the first door she had opened.
Then Noah burst through the front door.
"Mom!"
"What?"
"Grandma Evelyn is here."
Elena stood instantly.
Nathan stared.
"What?"
Noah looked confused.
"She's standing across the street."
Elena walked outside.
Evelyn remained beside her car.
She had brought no gifts.
No attorney.
No explanation.
She looked at Elena.
"May I speak to the boys?"
Elena crossed her arms.
"No."
Evelyn nodded.
"I understand."
May you like
Then she did something nobody expected.
She turned around and left.
