The Accident Before the Accident

Chapter 11 - The Accident Before the Accident

Elena's father, Robert Carter, had worked for the Whitmore company twenty years earlier.

He had been a construction supervisor.

Nathan's father, Richard, had been the company president.

Then a scaffolding failure killed two workers.

Robert had warned management about safety violations three weeks earlier.

The report disappeared.

Months later, Richard Whitmore suffered a heart attack.

Evelyn blamed Robert.

"He destroyed your father's reputation," she told Nathan when he confronted her.

They stood alone in the estate library.

"You hated Elena because of her father?"

"I hated what her family did to ours."

Nathan stared at her.

"Her father reported a safety problem."

"He went to the press."

"After the company ignored him."

Evelyn's eyes flashed.

"You were a child. You don't remember what happened."

Nathan moved closer.

"I remember Dad drinking alone."

"He was humiliated."

"Maybe he was guilty."

Evelyn slapped the desk.

"Don't say that."

Nathan finally understood.

His mother hadn't just been protecting the company.

She had been protecting a version of the past.

If Nathan married Elena, the Carter family would become part of the Whitmore family.

The woman whose father had exposed Richard's failure would become Evelyn's daughter-in-law.

And Evelyn could not bear it.

"So you punished Elena."

"I protected you from people who hated us."

"She loved me."

"Love changes."

Nathan's laugh was hollow.

"Apparently control doesn't."

Meanwhile, Elena confronted her father.

Robert had never told her the full story.

"I didn't want you carrying it."

"You knew Evelyn hated our family."

"Yes."

"And you let me date Nathan?"

Robert looked at her gently.

"He wasn't his father."

The simplicity of it hit her.

"I thought love might end what bitterness started."

Elena sat down.

"Instead it made it worse."

Robert shook his head.

"No."

"What do you mean?"

"Evelyn made it worse."

He reached into an old filing cabinet.

"I kept something because I knew one day someone would ask."

Elena groaned.

"Dad, please don't tell me this family has another secret box."

Despite everything, Robert smiled.

"Not a box."

He handed her a photograph.

It showed Richard Whitmore and Robert together.

Shaking hands.

Taken only three weeks before Richard died.

On the back, Richard had written:

Robert — I should have listened sooner. I'm sorry.

Elena stared.

"Evelyn knows about this?"

"No."

"Why not?"

Robert's expression darkened.

"Because the day after Richard gave me that photograph, Evelyn offered me twenty thousand dollars to leave town."

Elena looked up sharply.

"And when I refused..."

May you like

Robert paused.

"...she made sure I never worked in construction again."
