The Apology With No Audience

Chapter 17 - The Apology With No Audience

Evelyn returned the following Saturday.

Again, she remained outside.

Again, Elena said no.

Evelyn left.

She came back one week later.

No gifts.

No demands.

No tears used as weapons.

This time Elena stepped onto the porch.

"Why do you keep coming?"

Evelyn looked exhausted.

"Because Nathan said relationships are earned."

"You think standing on my sidewalk earns forgiveness?"

"No."

"Then what are you doing?"

"Showing up."

Elena almost laughed.

Nathan had learned that lesson from her.

Now Evelyn was learning it from Nathan.

Life had a strange sense of symmetry.

"What would you say to them?" Elena asked.

Evelyn's eyes filled.

"The truth."

"Which truth?"

"That I knew about them."

Elena studied her.

"And?"

"That I kept their father away."

"And?"

Evelyn struggled.

Elena waited.

Finally she whispered, "That I was wrong."

It wasn't enough.

But it was honest.

The following month, Elena allowed a ten-minute meeting.

Nathan stayed nearby.

Noah, Eli and Sam sat on the porch.

Evelyn stood before them.

Noah spoke first.

"You're our grandma?"

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell our dad about us?"

Nathan closed his eyes.

Evelyn looked at him.

Then at Elena.

Neither rescued her.

So she answered.

"Because I was angry at your mother's family."

Noah frowned.

"At us?"

"No."

"But you hurt us."

Evelyn began crying.

"Yes."

Eli looked confused.

"That doesn't make sense."

Evelyn gave a sad smile.

"No. It doesn't."

Sam asked the simplest question.

"Are you sorry?"

"Every day."

Noah crossed his arms.

"Mom says saying sorry doesn't fix stuff."

Elena nearly smiled.

Evelyn nodded.

"Your mom is right."

The boys did not hug her.

Nobody forced them.

But when Evelyn stood to leave, Sam said, "You can come next Saturday."

Evelyn stopped.

"Are you sure?"

Sam shrugged.

"We can see."

It was not forgiveness.

It was something smaller.

And perhaps more valuable.

A beginning.

That night Nathan found Elena washing dishes.

He took the towel from her hand.

"Walk with me."

"Where?"

"Outside."

The backyard was quiet.

Nathan stopped beneath the old maple tree.

"I've been thinking."

"That's dangerous."

He smiled.

"I don't want my old life back."

Elena's humor disappeared.

Nathan continued.

"I spent weeks wishing we could return to seven years ago."

He looked at her.

"But the woman standing in front of me isn't twenty-nine anymore."

Elena's eyes filled.

"And I'm not the man I was."

He took a breath.

"So I'm not asking you to go back."

"What are you asking?"

May you like

Nathan extended his hand.

"Would you let me meet you again?"
