The Woman Everyone Feared

Chapter 12 - The Woman Everyone Feared
For decades, Evelyn Whitmore had controlled people because everyone believed fighting her would cost too much.
Robert lost his career.
Elena lost Nathan.
Caroline lost the courage to speak.
Madison nearly lost herself.
And Nathan lost his sons.
The pattern became impossible to ignore.
But Elena surprised everyone.
She refused to destroy Evelyn publicly.
Nathan couldn't understand.
"After everything she did?"
They stood in Elena's kitchen late one evening.
"She deserves consequences," Elena said.
"Then why not release everything?"
"Because your sons are watching."
Nathan frowned.
"They need to see that people are held accountable."
"Yes."
Elena turned toward him.
"But they also need to learn the difference between justice and revenge."
Nathan fell silent.
Elena continued.
"I spent seven years hating you."
"I know."
"I imagined the day you would regret leaving us."
Nathan looked down.
"And now?"
"Now I know you didn't."
She took a breath.
"And somehow that doesn't give me those years back."
Nathan looked at her.
"I'm not asking you to forgive me for something I didn't do."
"No?"
"No."
He stepped closer but kept distance between them.
"I'm asking you to let me be angry with you."
Elena blinked.
Nathan continued.
"You get to be angry that I wasn't there. Even if it wasn't my choice."
Her eyes filled.
"You get to hate that Noah learned to ride a bike without me."
A tear slipped down her cheek.
"That Eli broke his arm and I didn't know."
Another tear.
"That Sam was sick and I wasn't beside you."
Nathan's voice broke.
"Because I hate it too."
For seven years Elena had carried all the anger alone.
Now someone finally stood beside her inside it.
She began crying.
Not dramatically.
Quietly.
Exhaustedly.
Nathan didn't touch her until she reached for him first.
Then he held her.
For perhaps thirty seconds.
Maybe forty.
Then Elena stepped back.
"This doesn't mean we're getting back together."
Nathan almost smiled through his tears.
"I know."
"Good."
"But can I ask something?"
"What?"
"Do you still hate me?"
Elena looked at him for a long time.
"No."
Nathan exhaled.
She picked up her coffee.
"Unfortunately, that's starting to become the problem."
Neither of them noticed Noah standing in the hallway.
But Noah had heard everything.

And the next morning, he asked Nathan a question neither adult was prepared to answer.
"Do you still love my mom?"
