The Ring Evelyn Returned

Chapter 19 - The Ring Evelyn Returned
Inside was a ring.
Not new.
Not enormous.
Elena recognized it immediately.
Seven years earlier, Nathan had given it to her beside the lake.
His grandmother's engagement ring.
After Nathan's accident, Elena had returned it to Evelyn.
She had believed Nathan no longer wanted her.
Evelyn had kept it.
Until now.
There was a note beneath it.
Elena,
I once believed I had the right to decide whether you belonged in my son's life.
I was wrong.
This ring was never mine to keep.
What happens next belongs to you and Nathan.
No interference.
No conditions.
Evelyn.
Elena stared at the words.
Nathan read over her shoulder.
For once, his mother had given something back without deciding what should happen afterward.
Noah looked impatient.
"So?"
Elena laughed.
"So what?"
"Are you getting married?"
Nathan nearly dropped the box.
"Noah!"
"What?"
Caroline burst out laughing.
Eli joined her.
Sam looked genuinely concerned.
"Do we have to wear pink suits again?"
Everyone laughed then.
Even Elena.
Nathan crouched beside him.
"Absolutely not."
"Good."
Elena looked at Nathan.
"Did you plan this?"
"No."
"You swear?"
"I came here to say goodbye to the house."
She believed him.
Nathan took the ring from the box.
Then he surprised her.
He didn't kneel.
He didn't propose.
He simply placed the ring in her palm.
"This belongs to you."
Elena looked down.
"What if I don't want it?"
"Then don't wear it."
"What if I never want to marry you?"
Nathan's smile was gentle.
"Then I'll still be at baseball practice Tuesday."
Elena's eyes filled.
"And Eli's school conference Thursday?"
"I'll be there."
"Sam's doctor appointment?"
"I already moved a meeting."
She laughed through her tears.
Nathan closed her fingers around the ring.
"I meant what I said."
"What?"
"I don't need the life we were supposed to have."
He looked toward their sons.
"I want the one we can build now."
Elena kissed him.
Not because of the ring.
Not because of the mansion.
Not because an old wrong had finally been acknowledged.
She kissed him because for nearly a year Nathan had done the one thing she had asked from the beginning.
He had shown up.
Behind them, Noah groaned.
"Oh, come on."
Eli covered Sam's eyes.
Sam shouted, "I can still hear it!"
They all laughed.
And seven years after another woman had decided their future for them, Elena and Nathan finally made a decision that belonged only to them.
They chose each other.

But the real wedding came one year later.
And this time, the three boys had something very important to say before their parents could finish their vows.
