## chapter 01 - The Girl on the Television
Frank Miller had been angry before the news came on.
Angry at the overdue electric bill.
Angry at the empty beer cans on the table.
Angry at a life that seemed to have narrowed into one worn recliner and the same four walls.
Then the television showed a graduation ceremony from the local college.
Frank barely looked up.
Until a young woman in a black cap and gown stepped onto the screen.
She had long brown hair, a nervous smile, and a small silver pendant around her neck.
Frank's hand froze around the remote.
The reporter said her name.
“Emily Carter, this year's scholarship graduate—”
Frank stopped breathing.
The room seemed to disappear.
Emily.
He had not heard that name spoken aloud in eighteen years.
The girl smiled at the camera.
Frank leaned forward.
“No,” he whispered.
Then he saw the pendant.
A tiny silver star.
He had bought that necklace before she was born.
His face collapsed.
The remote slipped from his hand.
On the television, Emily accepted her diploma while the crowd applauded.
