Chapter 09 - The Scholarship Dinner
Emily invited Frank to a scholarship dinner.
Laura would be there.
Frank almost refused.
Then Emily said, “I'm tired of having separate families.”
So he went.
Frank wore his only suit.
Laura sat across from him.
The tension was unbearable.
Then Emily's name was announced.
She walked onto the stage.
Frank stood first.
Laura stood beside him.
They applauded together.
Emily saw them.
For one moment, she looked like the girl from the television again.
Except this time, Frank was not watching from a recliner.
He was there.
After the ceremony, a photographer asked for a family picture.
Emily hesitated.
Then stood between them.
Frank did not touch Laura.
Laura did not move away.
The photograph captured three people who had lost eighteen years.
But also three people still alive.
Sometimes, Frank realized, life did not return what was stolen.
