Chapter 18 - The Second Graduation
Four years after Frank saw Emily on television, she graduated from nursing school.
This time, he was there.
Front row.
Laura beside him.
Frank cried before Emily even crossed the stage.
Laura handed him a tissue.
“Stop pretending you're not crying.”
“I have allergies.”
“Inside?”
Frank ignored her.
Emily's name was called.
She walked across the stage.
Frank stood.
So did Laura.
Emily looked toward them.
Four years earlier, Frank had watched from a dark room believing his life was already over.
Now his daughter was looking directly at him.
He applauded until his hands hurt.
Afterward, Emily gave him her diploma for a moment.
“Hold this.”
Frank stared at it.
“Why?”
“Because you missed the first one.”
He understood.
