Chapter 14 - The College Move
Emily received a nursing scholarship in another city.
Laura worried.
Frank pretended not to.
On moving day, both parents arrived.
They argued over boxes.
Directions.
Furniture.
For once, the conflict was ordinary.
Emily loved it.
At the dorm, Frank repaired a broken shelf.
Laura made the bed.
Then both stood awkwardly near the door.
Emily laughed.
“You can leave now.”
Laura hugged her.
Frank waited.
Emily hugged him too.
“Call me when you get there,” Frank said.
Emily smiled.
“You sound like Mom.”
Frank looked horrified.
Laura laughed.
It was the first time all three laughed together.
Then they drove home in separate cars.
Not enemies.
Not friends exactly.
