Laura came to Frank alone.
She sat at his kitchen table.
“I owe you something.”
Frank waited.
“I am sorry.”
He looked at her.
“For telling you Emily died.”
The words took eighteen years to arrive.
Frank felt anger.
Relief.
Grief.
All at once.
Laura continued.
“I was afraid. My mother convinced me it was the only way.”
“You still chose it.”
“I know.”
Frank looked out the window.
He could have punished her.
He had imagined this apology for years.
Now that it came, revenge seemed small.
“I forgive you,” he said.
Laura cried.
Frank added, “But I won't pretend it didn't happen.”
“I wouldn't ask you to.”
That was the difference between forgiveness and erasure.
They would never be a couple again.
They did not need to be.
