Laura's Regret

Chapter 12 - Laura's Regret
Laura began therapy.
So did Emily.
Frank continued his recovery meetings.
For the first time, all three stopped trying to repair the family through private promises.
Laura admitted something to Emily.
“When your grandmother died, I was relieved.”
Emily stared at her.
Then Laura began crying.
“I loved her. But I also spent my whole life obeying her.”
Emily understood more than she wanted to.
Ruth had controlled Laura with fear.
Laura had then controlled Emily with silence.
Pain passed through families like an inheritance.
Unless someone stopped it.
Emily decided she would.
She told both parents:
“No more lies to protect me.”
Frank agreed immediately.
Laura struggled.

But she agreed too.
It became the first rule of their strange new family.
