Caroline’s Confession

Chapter 11 - Caroline’s Confession
Caroline asked Claire to meet.
Claire nearly refused.
Then Caroline said she knew who leaked the story.
They met in a quiet café.
“It was my mother,” Caroline said.
Claire stared at her.
Caroline explained that her family had expected a marriage between the Wells and Cole families.
Adrian’s sons threatened that arrangement.
“So she tried to destroy me?”
“She tried to make you look dangerous enough that Adrian would distance himself.”
Claire almost laughed.
“His father tried that nine years ago.”
Caroline looked ashamed.
“I know.”
“Did you help her?”
Caroline hesitated.
That was answer enough.
“I gave her your workplace address.”
Claire stood.
Caroline quickly said, “I’m sorry.”
Claire stopped.
“You didn’t publish the article, but you handed someone the match.”
Caroline nodded.
Claire left.
Later, Adrian learned the truth.
He permanently ended all business negotiations with the Wells family.
It cost his company millions.
The board was furious.
Adrian did it anyway.
When Claire asked why, he looked genuinely surprised.
“Because my sons are not negotiating leverage.”
That evening, Caroline publicly admitted her family’s role.
The story changed overnight.
For once, Claire was not painted as the villain.
But vindication brought little satisfaction.

She wanted peace.
Slowly, finally, it seemed possible.
