The Choice Victor Would Have Made

Chapter 14 - The Choice Victor Would Have Made

Adrian did not tell Claire immediately.

That was his mistake.

She found the contract on his desk.

London.

Three years.

A salary large enough to change anyone’s life.

Claire felt nine years collapse into one moment.

“When were you going to tell us?”

“I haven’t decided.”

“That means you’re considering it.”

“Yes.”

She stepped back.

Adrian understood what she heard.

Abandonment.

Again.

“I’m not my father.”

“No. But this is exactly the future he wanted for you.”

Adrian looked at the contract.

That sentence changed something.

He had spent years chasing achievements without asking whether he wanted them.

The next morning he declined the offer.

Claire was stunned.

“You didn’t have to.”

“Yes, I did.”

“For us?”

“For me.”

He smiled.

“I already lost too much time living according to someone else’s definition of success.”

Later, Adrian accepted a smaller leadership role that allowed him to remain in Boston.

The board called it a step backward.

Noah called it “not moving to stupid England.”

Adrian preferred Noah’s analysis.

Claire saw then that Adrian was not choosing them out of guilt.

He was choosing a different life.

There was a difference.

And for the first time, she believed he might truly stay.
