The Grandfather’s Other Secret

Chapter 05 - The Grandfather’s Other Secret
Victor Cole’s deception went deeper.
His attorney discovered a trust created eight years earlier.
It named Noah and Eli as beneficiaries.
Claire was stunned.
Victor had known about them the entire time.
“He financially monitored you,” the attorney explained.
Claire felt sick.
Victor knew where she lived.
Where the boys attended preschool.
When she changed jobs.
He had not contacted them once.
Instead, he quietly placed money aside as though wealth could substitute for a grandfather’s presence.
Adrian was furious.
“I don’t want his money near them.”
Claire surprised him.
“The money isn’t guilty.”
He looked at her.
She continued.
“If it can pay for college someday, the boys should have it.”
Adrian nodded.
“You’re right.”
It was the first major decision they made together as parents.
Then the attorney handed Claire another envelope.
This one was addressed to her.
Victor had written it shortly before his death.
Claire almost threw it away.
Adrian stopped her.
“You don’t owe him forgiveness.”
“I know.”
“But maybe you deserve to know what he finally understood.”
Claire opened it.
Victor admitted he had watched the twins from a distance.
He had seen Noah win a school spelling competition.
He had seen Eli leave the emergency room after breaking his wrist.
He had wanted to approach them.
Cowardice stopped him.
At the bottom of the letter, Victor wrote:
I believed I was protecting my son’s future. Instead, I stole part of it.
Claire folded the letter.
Adrian stared at the floor.

Neither of them felt victorious.
Some apologies simply arrived too late.
