Adrian planned an elegant proposal.
The twins ruined it completely.
He had hidden the ring inside a drawer.
Eli found it while searching for batteries.
Within five minutes, Noah knew.
Within ten, both boys were giving Adrian advice.
“You need candles.”
“No candles. Mom says they’re a fire hazard.”
“Flowers.”
“She doesn’t like roses.”
“How do you know?”
“I listen.”
Eventually Adrian abandoned the elaborate plan.
One Sunday morning, Claire walked into the kitchen.
The twins were making pancakes.
Badly.
Flour covered the counter.
Adrian stood between them holding the ring.
Claire stopped.
“No.”
Adrian panicked.
“No?”
She laughed through tears.
“No, I mean you did not let them cook unsupervised.”
The twins protested.
Adrian laughed.
Then he asked.
“Claire Bennett, will you marry me?”
She looked at the three people waiting for her answer.
Nine years earlier she believed this family had been taken from her forever.
Now it stood in her kitchen covered in pancake flour.
“Yes.”
The boys screamed.
Adrian kissed her.
