Chapter 01 - HE KNELT WITH A DIAMOND NECKLACE—THEN THE JEWELER WHISPERED, “THAT BELONGED TO YOUR DEAD MOTHER”

## chapter 01 - The Necklace in the Red Box

Claire Bennett had only gone into Harrington Jewelers because her six-year-old daughter, Sophie, wanted to look at the sparkling necklaces in the window.

She had no idea that ten minutes later, her entire past would be torn open.

Claire stood beneath the bright showroom lights in a dark emerald dress, holding Sophie against her hip.

Then she saw Daniel Mercer.

Her boyfriend of eighteen months.

He was dressed in a navy suit, standing beside the most expensive display case in the store.

"Daniel?"

Before Claire could ask what he was doing there, he lowered himself onto one knee.

Several customers turned.

Sophie smiled immediately.

"Mommy, look!"

Daniel opened a dark red jewelry box.

Inside was not a ring.

It was a breathtaking diamond necklace with a large teardrop-shaped stone hanging from the center.

Claire stopped breathing.

She knew that necklace.

Or at least she thought she did.

Daniel smiled nervously.

"I know this isn't traditional."

He looked at Sophie, then back at Claire.

"But I wanted to give you something that could belong to both of you someday."

Claire stared at the necklace.

Her hands began trembling.

Behind Daniel stood Eleanor Harrington, the seventy-two-year-old owner of the jewelry store.

Until that moment, Eleanor had been watching silently.

Then her expression changed.

She stepped forward sharply.

"Young man."

Daniel turned.

Eleanor pointed toward the open jewelry box.

"Where did you get that?"

Daniel looked confused.

"I bought it through a private estate broker."

Claire barely heard him.

She reached toward the necklace.

Tucked beneath the velvet lining was a small yellow certificate.

Claire pulled it out.

The handwriting across the bottom made tears immediately fill her eyes.

Margaret Bennett.

Her mother's name.

Claire's mother had died nineteen years earlier.

And according to Claire's family, everything she owned had been destroyed in a house fire.

Including the necklace Claire remembered seeing around her mother's neck in every important photograph from her childhood.

Eleanor stared at the certificate.

Then at Claire.

"Who are you?"

Claire swallowed.

"Claire Bennett."

The elderly jeweler went completely still.

Daniel slowly stood.

"What is happening?"

Eleanor looked directly at Claire.

"I sold this necklace to your father twenty-seven years ago."

Claire felt Sophie tighten her arms around her neck.

Then Eleanor said the words that changed everything.

"And your mother didn't die wearing it."

Claire's face went pale.

"What do you mean?"

Eleanor lowered her voice.

"She came into this store three days before the fire."

Claire stared at her.

"She was trying to sell it."

Daniel looked from one woman to the other.

Claire could barely speak.

"Why?"

May you like

Eleanor's answer was quiet.

"Because she said she was taking you and running away from your father."
