The Package in the Vault

Chapter 06 - The Package in the Vault
The court granted Claire access to the sealed package two weeks later.
William tried to stop it.
That made Claire even more determined.
Inside Harrington's private office, Eleanor opened the vault.
Claire stood beside Daniel.
Rebecca waited behind them.
The package contained no jewels.
No cash.
No secret will.
It contained documents.
Property records.
Bank transfers.
Photographs.
And a small cassette tape.
Claire picked it up.
Her hands shook.
The label read:
For Claire, someday.
Eleanor found an old cassette player.
Claire pressed play.
Static.
Then Margaret's voice.
Claire hadn't heard it since childhood.
"My name is Margaret Bennett."
Claire began crying immediately.
Daniel took her hand.
Margaret explained that William had been hiding money through a construction company he owned with his brother.
Millions of dollars.
Some of it was legitimate.
Some was not.
Margaret discovered falsified invoices and accounts opened under other people's names.
When she confronted William, he begged her to stay silent.
When she refused, he threatened divorce and custody.
But Margaret's next words changed everything.
"If something happens to me, I do not believe William planned to harm me."
Claire looked up.
That wasn't what she expected.
Margaret continued.
"But I believe his brother, Raymond, is capable of anything."
Claire remembered Uncle Ray.
He had died twelve years earlier.
She barely remembered him.
Margaret said Raymond had followed her.
Threatened her.
Demanded the documents.
She planned to take Claire and leave town until she could speak with federal investigators.
The recording ended.
Rebecca covered her mouth.
"I didn't know about Raymond."
Claire turned toward her.
"You thought my father threatened you."
"He did."
"Maybe he was protecting Raymond."
Nobody answered.
Then Eleanor found one final item inside the package.
A photograph taken outside the Bennett house on the night of the fire.
A car was parked across the street.
The license plate was visible.
Daniel stared at it.
"Is that your father's car?"
Claire shook her head.
"No."
She knew the vehicle.
May you like
It belonged to Raymond Bennett.
But according to every official record, Raymond had been hundreds of miles away that night.
