William Tells the Whole Story

Chapter 12 - William Tells the Whole Story

William requested to speak publicly before sentencing.

Claire almost didn't attend.

Then she decided Margaret deserved to hear the truth spoken aloud, even if only through her daughter.

William stood before the court.

He admitted everything.

He knew Raymond had threatened Margaret.

He knew about the fraud.

He knew Margaret wanted to leave.

And on the night of the fire, when Raymond called, William chose hesitation.

"I told myself I needed facts."

William's voice shook.

"The truth is, I needed time to decide whether saving my wife would destroy my life."

Claire closed her eyes.

William continued.

"Those nineteen minutes are the worst thing I have ever done."

He looked toward Claire.

"I cannot ask my daughter to forgive me."

Claire didn't move.

"I spent nineteen years telling her I protected her."

William's voice broke.

"I was protecting myself."

The judge imposed penalties for obstruction and financial crimes.

William avoided a long prison term because of his age, cooperation, and the complexity of the decades-old case.

Claire knew some people would consider that unfair.

She did too.

But she realized punishment wasn't the only consequence.

William lost his company.

His reputation.

Much of his wealth.

Most painfully, he lost the unquestioned trust of his daughter.

After court, he approached Claire.

"I'm sorry."

She looked at him.

"I know."

"Will that ever be enough?"

"No."

William nodded.

Claire continued.

"But maybe someday it can be the beginning of something honest."

He started crying.

Claire did not hug him.

May you like

Not yet.

But she didn't walk away either.
