The Woman in the Photograph

Chapter 14 - The Woman in the Photograph

While preparing for the wedding, Claire found an old photograph.

Margaret stood outside the Bennett house.

She was wearing the diamond necklace.

Claire was beside her, nine years old.

William stood behind them.

For years Claire had seen only a happy family.

Now she saw other details.

Margaret's smile didn't reach her eyes.

William's hand was tightly placed on her shoulder.

Claire remembered the day.

Her mother had whispered:

"Someday, you get to choose your own life."

Claire had forgotten those words.

Now they returned.

She framed the photograph.

Not because the family in it had been perfect.

Because Margaret had been real.

Complicated.

Afraid.

Brave.

The night before the wedding, Claire visited her mother's grave.

She brought no flowers.

Only the photograph.

"I used to think you left me."

Claire wiped her eyes.

"Then I thought Dad took you from me."

She looked at the headstone.

"Maybe the truth is that fear took years from all of us."

She told Margaret about Sophie.

Daniel.

The foundation.

Even William.

"I'm not ready to forgive everything."

A breeze moved through the trees.

"But I'm ready to stop making anger the only thing I inherited."

Claire placed her hand against the headstone.

"Your necklace came home."

May you like

Then she smiled.

"So did your story."
