The House That Burned

Chapter 18 - The House That Burned

The land where Claire's childhood house once stood had remained empty for decades.

William still owned it.

He offered it to Claire.

She refused.

Then Sophie had an idea.

"Build something there."

Claire looked at her.

"What?"

"A house for people who need somewhere to go."

The foundation developed the property.

Not one house.

Six small transitional cottages.

Each gave mothers and children temporary housing while rebuilding their lives.

William donated the land.

He asked for no name on the building.

Claire gave him one responsibility.

Plant the trees.

On opening day, William stood beside Sophie placing a young maple into the ground.

Claire watched them.

Daniel slipped his hand into hers.

"You're okay?"

Claire nodded.

For most of her life, that property represented one terrible night.

Now children played there.

Women carried boxes into safe homes.

New keys were handed out.

William approached Claire.

"I wish your mother could see this."

Claire looked around.

"I think she'd understand."

William nodded.

Then Sophie called:

"Grandpa, you're planting it crooked!"

William laughed.

For the first time, Claire heard the sound without immediately thinking about betrayal.

Healing hadn't erased memory.

It had simply made room for other memories beside it.
