The Necklace Returns to the Window

Chapter 19 - The Necklace Returns to the Window
Eleanor Harrington died at eighty-nine.
In her will, she left one unusual request.
She wanted Margaret's necklace displayed in the front window of Harrington Jewelers for one month.
Claire agreed.
Beside it was a small card.
No family scandal.
No names except Margaret's.
It read:
Some jewelry is bought to show wealth.
Some is sold to buy freedom.
This necklace helped one woman's truth survive long enough to save others.
People stopped to read it.
Donations poured into the foundation.
One anonymous donor gave $100,000.
Claire eventually discovered it was William.
She confronted him.
"You didn't have to do that."
"I know."
"Why anonymously?"
William smiled.
"Because for most of my life, I needed people to know what I owned."
He looked toward the necklace.
"Your mother taught me too late that what matters is what you give back."
Claire took his hand.
That evening, the necklace was removed from the window.
Sophie asked what would happen to it next.
Claire smiled.
"That's for you to decide someday."
Sophie looked thoughtful.

"I think I know."
But she refused to tell anyone.
