Sophie's Necklace

Chapter 16 - Sophie's Necklace

Years passed.

The Margaret Bennett Independence Fund expanded into three counties.

Claire became known for something she never expected.

Not her family's scandal.

Her work.

Daniel managed operations while Claire worked directly with families.

Sophie grew up surrounded by stories of women starting over.

On her sixteenth birthday, Claire took her to Harrington Jewelers.

Eleanor had retired.

Her granddaughter now managed the store.

The diamond necklace waited inside the same red box.

Sophie stared at it.

"Is that Grandma Margaret's?"

"Yes."

Claire had never worn it.

She explained the entire story.

Not every painful detail.

But enough.

Sophie touched the teardrop diamond.

"Are you giving it to me?"

"No."

Sophie looked surprised.

Claire smiled.

"Not yet."

"Then why are we here?"

"Because I want you to understand something."

Claire held the necklace.

"This isn't valuable because of the diamonds."

"It's valuable because Grandma tried to use it to buy freedom."

Sophie looked at her mother.

"And you kept it?"

"I kept the story."

Claire returned the necklace to the box.

"When you're older, you can decide what it means to you."

Sophie smiled.

"Maybe I'll never wear it."

"That's okay."

"Maybe I'll sell it and put the money in the foundation."

May you like

Claire laughed.

"Your grandmother would probably approve."
