The Money Margaret Tried to Protect

Chapter 11 - The Money Margaret Tried to Protect

The financial investigation uncovered millions hidden across old accounts.

Some belonged to William.

Some had been controlled by Raymond.

A portion had been stolen from investors.

Another portion came from fraudulent property contracts.

Margaret had discovered almost everything.

Claire learned her mother wasn't simply trying to escape a bad marriage.

She was preparing to expose a criminal network.

One recovered account had been opened in Margaret's name without her knowledge.

Legally, part of the remaining assets passed to Claire after restitution claims were settled.

Claire didn't want the money.

Daniel understood.

"It feels dirty."

"It feels like it cost Mom her life."

Claire considered donating all of it.

Rebecca stopped her.

"Your mother wanted you safe."

Claire eventually made a decision.

She created the Margaret Bennett Independence Fund.

It provided temporary housing and legal assistance to women trying to leave financially controlling relationships.

The first grant helped a mother and two children move into a small apartment.

Claire met her once.

The woman said:

"I kept thinking I needed permission to leave."

Claire remembered Margaret.

"No one should need permission to be safe."

The fund became Claire's way of giving her mother's courage somewhere to continue living.

Eleanor donated the necklace.

Claire refused at first.

"It's worth too much."

Eleanor smiled.

"It's already yours in every way that matters."

Claire had it placed in a secure display at the foundation.

Beside it was Margaret's handwritten certificate.
