Evelyn's Offer

Chapter 12 - Evelyn's Offer
Evelyn came to Claire's apartment unannounced.
Claire almost did not let her in.
Then she saw the folder in Evelyn's hand.
They sat at the small kitchen table.
Evelyn looked around the apartment with thinly disguised disapproval.
The twins' backpacks hung from hooks near the door.
A laundry basket sat on a chair.
Dinner dishes dried beside the sink.
It was not the Bennett mansion.
It was home.
Evelyn placed the folder on the table.
"I can make this end."
Claire did not touch it.
"How?"
"I'll pay Adrian's debts."
Claire waited.
"In exchange, you agree to remain in the county. The boys stay at their current school. I receive guaranteed visitation."
"And Adrian?"
"We settle custody privately."
Claire almost admired her.
Even after everything, Evelyn believed every human problem had a purchase price.
"What else?"
Evelyn slid the folder closer.
Claire opened it.
A proposed settlement.
A house.
Paid for.
A generous monthly payment.
Private school tuition.
All controlled through a family entity Evelyn managed.
Claire closed the folder.
"You still don't understand."
"I'm trying to protect my grandsons."
"You're trying to make sure none of us can leave you."
Evelyn's expression hardened.
"Do you know how difficult life will be without this family?"
Claire looked around the apartment.
At the chipped table.
At Luke's sneakers by the door.
At Owen's science project on the counter.
"We're already living without this family."
Evelyn stood.
"You'll regret pride."
Claire handed back the folder.
"This isn't pride."
She opened the door.
"It's the first decision I've made in years that nobody in your family gets to own."
Evelyn left.
But she forgot one page on the table.
A handwritten note from her attorney.

It referenced an account in the Cayman Islands.
And Adrian's name was beside it.
