The Father Who Warned Me Too Late

Chapter 03 - The Father Who Warned Me Too Late
The hearing was paused.
Claire sat in a consultation room with her attorney, Susan Parker, while Owen and Luke ate crackers from a vending machine.
"I don't understand," Claire said.
"Why didn't Richard tell me?"
Susan placed the documents on the table.
"Maybe he thought he had time."
Claire remembered her father-in-law as a reserved man who rarely raised his voice.
Richard had built a regional construction company from nothing. Adrian had grown up with money, but Richard never trusted easy wealth.
During Claire's marriage, Richard often asked questions that seemed strange at the time.
Did Claire have her own bank account?
Did she understand the mortgage?
Did she know where Adrian invested their savings?
Claire had laughed once and told him, "Richard, your son handles all of that."
Richard had not laughed.
Now she knew why.
His statement described a confrontation with Adrian two years before his death.
Adrian had accumulated debts through speculative real-estate deals.
He asked Richard to release part of the twins' trust early.
Richard refused.
Adrian then proposed that the trust reimburse him for "family housing expenses" if he became the boys' primary custodial parent.
Richard became suspicious.
He amended the trust.
Any parent who sought custody primarily for financial benefit would lose control over all trust reimbursements.
An independent trustee would handle every expense directly.
Susan tapped the page.
"Your husband may have believed the old trust terms were still active."
Claire stared at the wall.
"So he thought getting the boys meant getting access to the money."
"Possibly."
Across the room, Luke looked up.
"Mom?"
Claire forced a smile.
"I'm right here."
That was all the boys needed to hear.
But Claire needed answers.
Because Adrian had not acted alone.
Richard's statement included one more sentence.
My wife, Evelyn, is aware of Adrian's financial situation and has repeatedly encouraged me to reconsider the trust.
Claire looked through the glass window toward the courtroom.
Evelyn was standing beside Adrian.
Whispering urgently.

This had not begun with the divorce.
They had been planning for years.
