The House We Chose

Chapter 18 - The House We Chose
Claire was offered the old Bennett family house as part of the divorce settlement.
She refused it.
Everyone thought she was crazy.
The house had six bedrooms.
A pool.
A stone terrace.
A school district people fought to enter.
But Claire could not imagine raising the boys inside rooms where she had spent years doubting herself.
Instead, she used her share of the marital assets to buy a smaller house fifteen minutes away.
Three bedrooms.
A crooked porch.
A maple tree in the backyard.
The first night, they ate pizza on unopened moving boxes.
Luke complained that his bedroom was too small.
Owen said the stairs creaked.
Claire waited.
Then Luke smiled.
"But Dad doesn't have a key, right?"
Claire understood.
"No."
Owen looked up.
"Grandma?"
"No."
The boys exchanged a glance.
Then Luke raised his soda.
"Best house ever."
Claire laughed so hard she cried.
Over the next months, life became ordinary.
School mornings.
Laundry.
Baseball.
Therapy appointments.
Missed buses.
Adrian arrived for visits on time more often than not.
When he was late, he apologized without blaming traffic.
Evelyn sent letters.
Claire ignored the first three.
She read the fourth.
It did not contain a demand.
Only an apology.
Claire did not forgive her immediately.
Boundaries were not cruelty.
They were architecture.
A way of building a life that could stand.
One Saturday, Claire found the original brown envelope in a box.
She held it for a long time.
Then she placed it in a new folder labeled:
