Adrian Finally Tells the Truth

Chapter 16 - Adrian Finally Tells the Truth
Adrian asked Claire to meet at Susan's office.
No lawyers.
No Evelyn.
Just the two of them.
Claire agreed only because Susan remained in the next room.
Adrian looked different.
He had sold his luxury car.
His firm had removed him from management while his debts were restructured.
He was attending therapy.
For once, he did not begin with an excuse.
"I knew about the donor."
Claire said nothing.
"I was afraid you'd leave me if I told you."
"So you let me believe a lie for nine years."
"Yes."
"And then you used the truth against Owen."
Adrian closed his eyes.
"Yes."
Claire waited.
He forced himself to continue.
"My father was right about me."
"About the money?"
"About everything."
He admitted that after his first failed investment, Evelyn secretly bailed him out.
Then another failed.
Then another.
Every rescue made the next risk easier.
When Richard refused to help, Adrian felt humiliated.
When Claire filed for divorce, panic took over.
He saw the trust.
The house.
The boys.
All the pieces of his life became numbers in a problem he thought he could solve.
"I told myself I wanted custody because I loved them."
"Did you?"
"Yes."
His voice broke.
"But I also needed the money."
Claire appreciated the honesty.
It did not erase anything.
"Why are you telling me now?"
Adrian looked down.
"Because Owen asked me whether I would still want him if the trust disappeared."
Claire's eyes filled.
"What did you say?"
"I said yes."
"And?"
"He said he wished I had acted like it."
Neither spoke for a long time.
Finally Adrian slid a document across the table.
It was a consent agreement.
He was withdrawing his request for primary custody.
He was also agreeing never to seek control of the boys' trust.
Claire read every page.
Then she looked at him.

For the first time, Adrian was not asking her to save him.
He was accepting what saving himself would cost.
